What lies beneath
matters most.

Ground conditions govern foundation choices, retaining wall design and site feasibility. Geotechnical engineering done right means fewer surprises during construction and a structure that performs reliably for its full design life.

IGG provides complete structural design for geotechnical structures of all types — from simple gravity retaining walls to complex embedded sheet pile systems, slope stabilisation works and deep foundation solutions. We work directly from geotechnical investigation reports and coordinate with geotechnical specialists to deliver structural documentation that reflects actual ground conditions, fully compliant with Eurocode 7.

Engineering Considerations

Ground is never uniform.
Design must account for uncertainty.

01

Eurocode 7 Limit States

EC7 requires checking multiple geotechnical limit states — bearing resistance (GEO), sliding, overturning, structural failure (STR) and hydraulic heave (HYD). We verify all applicable limit states using Design Approach 1 with the correct partial factors.

02

Earth Pressure & Water

Lateral earth pressure — active, passive and at-rest — governs retaining wall and basement design. We account for groundwater conditions, drainage effectiveness and the influence of surcharge loading from traffic, structures and construction operations.

03

Settlement & Differential Movement

Absolute and differential settlement between foundation elements can cause structural distress in the superstructure. We size foundations to limit settlements within acceptable bounds and flag where variable ground conditions require special attention.

04

Slope Stability

Cut slopes, embankments and natural hillsides must be assessed for rotational and translational failure mechanisms. We calculate factors of safety under drained and undrained conditions, and design stabilisation systems where required.

05

Pile Design & Testing

Deep foundations require careful design of pile capacity in both compression and tension, group effects, negative skin friction and pile settlement. We size piles from soil parameters and coordinate pile testing programmes where required.

06

Working with Limited Investigation

Many projects have limited geotechnical data. We apply appropriate conservatism where ground conditions are uncertain, recommend targeted additional investigation where risk warrants it, and design structures that are robust to ground variability.

What we design.

Retaining Walls

Gravity, cantilever, counterfort and sheet pile walls for cut slopes, terracing and basement excavations.

Deep Foundations

Bored and driven pile systems, micro-piles and ground anchors for poor or variable ground conditions.

Slope Stabilisation

Soil nailing, rock anchoring, drainage schemes and reinforced fill for unstable slopes and embankments.

Basement Structures

Waterproof reinforced concrete basements, underpinning schemes and below-ground retaining systems.
